Everyone has a story; here is ours and why we are so excited to learn about yours. Our lives changed forever in 2012 with a cascade of family health crises, but before we get too deep here’s a little back story. Like most kids from the 80’s we grew up on the SAD (standard American diet) you know the one promoted on commercials, billboards and brightly colored boxes throughout grocery stores. This was long before the internet and being able to research and investigate for yourself, so like most others we didn’t know any better or a different way. When we met in college, the party continued and we invited fast food along for the ride (hello convenience). We used to joke that during our first years of marriage, we never turned on our oven and Buffalo Wild Wings knew our order by heart. We were able to sustain that lifestyle for a few more years (and by sustain I mean struggle through) with bloating, stomach aches, headaches, acne, fatigue, brain fog, and no endurance (not quite the party we hoped for). We then hit our first light bulb moment when Jeff went in for a physical and discovered that his blood pressure and cholesterol were out of control at the age of 26. With his blood pressure unable to get below 150/80 and his cholesterol over the 300 mark, we knew we had to make some changes. Hello gym membership, running program, counting macros and cheap supplements.
Once again we didn’t know better but we were getting closer and this is what the journey is all about, learning and growing with gratitude every step of the way. We’re thankful for those days because not only did his cholesterol come down a lot, we also learned discipline, surprised the heck out of ourselves with our ability to run more than a block and gained confidence in the kitchen. That of course leads us to our next discovery and adventure, me (Becky) being diagnosed with celiac disease. Hello vast world of gluten-free options and more brightly colored boxes and advertisements, at least this time we knew a little better and brought those cooking “skills” with us. This is also where I rediscovered my love for research, reading and science. Every opened book opened our eyes more and more! That’s the beautiful thing about learning, once a mind has been shaped by new knowledge or experience, it can’t go back to its old dimension.
Before this gets too long-winded (crazy to believe I was once a shy introvert) let’s fast forward to 2012. This is when my dad was diagnosed with small bowel cancer and with his passing that same year came a spark inside us that has forever shaped the course of our lives. With this diagnosis and through treatment, the endless research and deeper dive into the science and nutrition world continued for me. While studying and continuing to make small changes to our lives (minus giving up sugar, let’s be realistic here sugar was a food group for us at the time) I (Becky) was then diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2015. This folks is where that spark became a burning passion so deep within us and our mission in life was starting to unveil itself.
After 6 months of bi-weekly chemotherapy and 4 weeks of radiation, I was told the cancer was in remission and the chance of relapse was low. Life went on and we became a little more conscious of how our choices affected our health. We were dazed, but had gotten through it and were ready to get back to living. That abruptly changed 6 months later at a routine CT scan prior to getting my port removed, and our world was rocked once again when we were told my cancer was back and with a vengeance. The treatment for relapsed lymphoma is some of the most intense chemotherapy that is out there with the hope of getting me back into remission and ready for a stem cell transplant with a 50/50 shot of long term remission.
After 4 rounds of the intense chemo, I had a scan that revealed the cancer was in fact in remission and we could proceed with the stem cell transplant. There’s really no words to describe it so we’ll just say it was hands down the toughest time of my life. The high dose chemotherapy brings one to the verge of death, and then you are saved by receiving your stem cells back that were harvested prior to transplant. One night during my 30-day hospital stay when I was feeling at my worst I didn’t want to fall asleep, because I wasn’t sure if I would wake up. When I finally went to bed I made a promise to myself that if I woke up and made it through this, I would not only get better, but I would use this experience to help others.
My goal was and will always be, to go from just surviving through everyday life to THRIVING, to leave the old ways behind embracing progress over perfection, and that my friends is our goal for you (without having to go through what I did)! We promise to never stop learning, growing, sharing and serving others for the greater good. We promise to meet you wherever you are on your journey and together we can take steps to become the best versions of ourselves in body, mind and soul. To lean in with love, grace and compassion for ourselves, our journey and for others on their journey. As a sonographer here in the Chippewa Valley, I feel the joy of helping others. I also feel compelled to help people rebalance their lives by addressing the lifestyle factors surrounding us that can lead us down a path of illness, discovering the root causes, listening, educating, empowering and providing hope.
I’ve been at rock bottom, and thanks to integrating a combination of functional nutrition, western medicine, lifestyle education, holistic therapies and extensive learning, I have been able to fully recover and feel the best I have ever felt. We believe that education bridges the gap between knowing and doing and like the great Maya Angelou said, “Do the best you can until you know better, then when you know better, do better”. So whether you’re looking to rebuild your body after a health crisis, you’ve been told you need to make lifestyle changes and don’t know where to start, you’re beginning your journey into health and vitality, you’re looking to optimize your health, and/or prevent chronic disease, we have a program for you. We would love to meet you, listen to your story and work alongside you on your journey!
We want to express our deepest gratitude to our family and friends who have supported and encouraged us along the way! We also want to take a moment for those who are no longer here on earth with us but have inspired us more than they will ever know, especially my Dad and a dear friend Amanda whose advice has been life-changing: “Whatever it is, write it down and make it happen”. Thank you for following along on our journey, we hope to see you soon!
With Joy and Gratitude,
Becky and Jeff Witt
